CHAPTER 7

I jolted awake, clammy and drenched in sweat from the nightmare I had awoken from. Looking around the sun-filled room, I was relieved to be laying in the bedroom Roman and I had been sharing as of late. The smell of freshly brewed coffee wafted throughout the apartment making my mouth water. I rolled out of the huge king-sized bed, wrapped myself in my fluffy pink robe, and made my way into the kitchen where Roman was rustling around in the refrigerator. I pulled out one of the stools at the counter, watching him move around shirtless in his loose-fitting sweats. That man was one hell of a sight to see. I could look at him forever, especially shirtless, and given our eternal damnation we were inflicted with, that was exactly what was going to happen.

“Good morning, gorgeous. I made us some coffee. I tried making toast, but as you can see, I’m not good at anything that has to do with cooking.” He pointed at the sink where he had dumped a few pieces of burnt toast.

I laughed, charmed at his effort of trying to be a domesticated demon. “It’s okay, I’m not hungry anyways. Coffee suffices just fine.” I blew a kiss at him over my coffee mug.

“How did you sleep? I felt you jostling around a lot like you were dreaming something pretty intense; I almost woke you up, but then you stopped.”

“It was definitely intense.” The dream was still lingering in my mind. “It was good to begin with until I got killed by Lilith and was sent to the dark abyss. And my biggest fear was never seeing you again.”

“That good huh?” He smirked, joining me at the bar. “Well, just so you know, I would follow you to the abyss so you would never be without me. I think your subconscious mind is messing with you.”

“I can’t stop thinking about her dark red hair that stood out against her pale white skin and the pure evil in her eyes as she stabbed me in the chest with a dagger. She wants you and she will stop at nothing to get you.”

His face turned stone cold. “You saw her.” It wasn’t a question. “You’ve never seen her, but yet you know exactly what she looks like.”

“Are you saying she was really there last night?”

“By what you just explained, I believe she was. She’s a succubus demon; she torments people in their dreams. There’s no doubt in my mind that she was there.”

“So, what does that mean?”

“It means she is determined to destroy you and in your dreams is where she will start.”

“Why doesn’t she just go into yours since she wants you so bad? She made that very fucking clear.”

“Jealousy does crazy things to people; it’s all a game to her driven by that jealousy. What better person to mess with than the one who my heart belongs to?”

I leaned over kissing him. “So, I’ve won the heart of a demon? Can’t say I ever saw that in my future, but then again, I never saw me being sent to Hell either.”

Once we were showered and dressed for the day, we decided we needed to figure out where Lilith was hiding out – besides in Devon’s and my dreams – and figure out a way to stop her before someone got hurt. Well, before I got hurt, I didn’t give a shit about Devon. Once this was over, I would be sure Devon paid dearly.

“Honestly the worst she could do is kill me and if that happens, then I’ll just go back to Hell anyways, so is it really an issue?”

“It is most definitely an issue. If she kills you, then you will end up in a dreamlike limbo that she controls. Lucifer may have banished her, but he banished her from Hell; he can’t make her just disappear altogether.”

I sat in silence. The tables had turned, and we were in real danger. I was only here to seduce men and send them to Hell for Satan, not fight jealous redheads who were after the demon I was sleeping with. I guess crimes of passion happen even in the afterlife.

“I can see the wheels turning in your pretty little head. I still say we head back to Hell now and not have to worry anymore about what she might do. At least in Hell, she can’t touch you. We are protected by Lucifer there; here we are fair game.”

“Ellenbergers never back down from a fight or a challenge. It’s not even as much about staying on earth anymore as it is figuring out a way to put an end to her and that slimeball Devon. I should have known he had something up his sleezy little sleeve.”

“The fact Lilith knew you were going to contact him means she’s been closer to us than we thought and close enough to see things that pissed her off.”

“Oh, I’m sure she saw quite a few things that pissed her off.” I raised my eyebrows and laughed, insinuating she had witnessed our passionate moments and was probably seething with jealousy. “Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. My mother taught me that when she divorced my father for cheating with an actress that ended up all over the tabloids for weeks and she took him through the wringer. It was a nasty divorce, but she definitely won the fight. He’s still paying for it. He has so much money, though, it barely made a dent.”

“That is true, Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned, or in our case, a demon. Lilith was definitely scorned by me and Lucifer, which is all the more reason to stay far away from her. Your mom made your dad pay with money; Lilith wants me to pay by death. We need to take care of Devon too. Who knows what she has promised him? People will do anything for power; take your father for example. Lilith is a pro at seduction, persuasion, and promising great things to power-hungry men.”

“No one is as good at seduction as me. When I get finished with him, I will send him to Hell where he belongs.”

“As long as you get to him first.”

“I will definitely get to him first, mark my words. Devon is a regular at Frankie’s Bar. It’s a seedy little Italian-owned bar outside of the city that is crawling with rotten people. That place is where he acquired most of his high paying clients. He represents rich people that need a low and dirty lawyer to win their cases. I’m sure he’s hanging around there; he wouldn’t miss some of the women that frequent the place to find themselves a sugar daddy.”

“How did you get involved with him? You didn’t need money and I don’t see you hanging out in a place like that.”

“A party that was a mistake. I had to have a restraining order placed on him because he would blow up my phone, follow me everywhere, show up at places I was at, and when he started showing up at my house, that was the final straw. He’s a class five stalker and that is why he’s so pissed at me and willing to help Lilith destroy me. Apparently, he holds a grudge.” I rolled my eyes.

“Well, even though he is working with Lilith right now doesn’t mean that you can’t still have a pull over him. He’s not a demon, only a pawn. That dagger she stabbed you with in your dream is the only dagger in existence that can kill demons. The metal used to make it was mixed with the blood of Christ thousands of years ago and is able to kill even the strongest of demons. Lucifer was the only one who had it.”

“How did Lilith get it in her possession?”

“She must have stolen it when Lucifer banished her, knowing she would seek revenge eventually. If we can get it back from her, we can kill her just as easily as she can kill us. We need Devon to deliver it with Lilith and to do that we will have to use a larger bargain for him to turn on her and trust you.”
