Rock Block(75)
Author: Mickey Miller

“That’s way cool. I always knew you were destined for greatness.”

“Oh, stop. Anyway, thought you might need some rescuing. Did I read that situation right?”

“You did. How’d you know?”

“I have a sixth sense for those kinds of things.” She shrugs, then pulls her hands away.

“Looks like she’s leaving,” I say, seeing Rachel exit through the front.

“Why didn’t you like talking to her? She’s cute.”

I shrug. “She’s just not my type.”

I think about the bomb in my jacket, that I’ve been carrying around for some time now.

Give it to her, a voice inside me says.

“Well, what is your type these days, Lucas? Now that you’re famous and all.”

My stomach curdles.

“I’m not famous.”

“Don’t bullshit me,” she says. “It’s surreal for me, too. I saw one of your games this spring, in San Francisco.”

“Oh, really?”

“Yeah. I’m so happy for you, to see you’re doing your thing.”

I finish my beer and set it down, lingering on her words.

I’m so happy for you…

Wait. Is it possible that Sky loves me the way I love her? She just wants me to be happy?

“Sky,” I say. “You want to go for a walk?”

“Sure,” she says. “I think that would be all right.”

I don’t ask about any potential boyfriend, on purpose.

I sign my tab and take my card back.

“Let’s go. It’s a nice warm night.” I feel the letter in my pocket.

I put my hand on the small of her back as we walk out.

Maya

As the water runs over my back, I stare at the wall like his body isn’t a magnet for my eyes right now.

I’ve had a reputation for being shameless when it comes to men, which is funny because that’s not exactly true. I’ve never indulged in, say, a hot shower hook-up in the dorms.

Right now, butterflies are surging in my stomach and I’m wondering that if I have the reputation, I might as well have some fun. And if there ever lived a man who brought out the need in me to be this bold, it’s Grant Taylor.

Grant’s eyes, though, are what gets me. They’re still cloudy, and I can’t get a read on him. My entire body reacts like dynamite as he simply stands to the side.

“So, what happened?” I ask, looking up at him.

“After our throwing session, Coach Johnson told me today I’m not even in the starting rotation, let alone the starting spot.”

My jaw drops. “Are you serious?”

He nods. “He said I need an attitude adjustment.”

“That’s absolute bull. You were throwing so fast in the field house today.” Bending my neck, I arch my back a little as I pull my hair back. “I mean, what do I know though?”

“Thanks,” he grins. “You know, I feel better already. Your turn.”

He steps out from under the water stream and I step in.

“Mmm. You like it hot, too,” I murmur, eyes closed as the water streams onto my head.

“Who doesn’t?”

“Well, word is DJ takes cold showers.”

“Oh. You meant the water.”

I furrow my brow as I lather up my hair with shampoo. “What did you think I meant?”

“I’ve no idea.”

“Don’t play dumb,” I add.

He reaches under the showerhead for his shampoo. He moves suddenly, and my bare hip grazes his forearm.

“Oh, ow,” I say, blinking my eyes shut. “Soap in the eyes. Let me rinse off a little more.”

“Of course,” he says.

We both freeze. My eyes flutter open and our pupils lock.

“Excuse me,” he says, his voice a low rumble.

“Yes, excuse you,” I reply.

In spite of how hard my heart is pounding, our little shared moment dissipates as quickly as it began. We go about our shower business, soaping, shampooing, and conditioning.

My heart slams against my chest. Are we really…just going to shower naked right now and pretend like it’s no big deal? Geez, only Grant would be able to have such self-control with me.

I mean…on the other hand, I wouldn’t put myself in this position with anyone but Grant, because there’s not another man on Earth I trust to be alone, naked, and slightly crazy, with.

Just a couple of hippies, nothing to see here. Reminds me of my mom’s old stories about the summer of ’69.

I change spots with him a few times through the process. Our slick skin brushes against one another multiple times. I’m not going to lie, I take advantage of the switching positions and eyes looking in different directions to steal a glance at the man below the belt.

Well. Not like he’s wearing a belt right now. And all I can say is wow.

At one point I feel something odd poke my lower side, and I can only guess what it might be.

“Maya…careful. Watch where you’re going,” Grant says.

“Me be careful? You’re the one who just poked me from behind. Watch where you’re pointing that thing,” I grin.

I hear him laughing.

“Grant…” I spin around and look up at him, and he smirks. “What’s so funny?”

“Just…damn. How can I be in a bad mood with peppy little you staring up at me?”

“I’m ‘peppy’?” Interesting compliment.

“Cheery then.”

I frown. My body is on fire and he’s not doing a damn thing. Screw it, I came into the shower with a purpose and I’m just going to speak my mind.

I put my hands on my hips. “Are you not attracted to me?”

“Maya, we’ve been through this.” His eyes don’t meet mine, which makes me wonder.

“Yes, we have, last week. You said I do turn you on, but I’m standing here naked, freaking throwing myself at you! So that was just drunken cloud talk last week at the bar? How you would ‘ravage my pussy’?” I even do the bunny ear quotation mark thing with my fingers. “That was just some silly scenario you made up to make me feel better for the night?”
