Always Meant to Be(30)
Author: Siobhan Davis

“It sucks, man,” he says, after finishing his burger. He dabs sauce from the corner of his mouth with a paper napkin before wiping his oily fingers. “What’ll you do if we find evidence of cheating?”

I glance over my shoulder to the back seat, where my Nikon camera rests. “Document it and then consider my next move.” I’m unsure where to go from there. I only just got Kendall to agree to be friends and I promised I wouldn’t interfere or mention her marriage. So, I can’t turn around and explain how I spied on her husband and found confirmation he’s cheating. I suspect she already knows. If she does, then I’m not sure this will make any difference, but I have to try. She wouldn’t approve of me doing this, but I’ve got to do something. Maybe looking at the physical proof of his betrayal will spur her into action. Thinking of her remaining married to that asshole ignites a tidal wave of rage I usually only feel for my father.

“Is that the douche?” Crusher asks, kicking his booted feet up on the dash, as Curtis emerges from the house.

“That’s him,” I growl, clenching my fists. I start up the engine as he climbs behind the wheel of his Merc.

“He looks like a slimeball.”

“I have always thought so.” Tugging my ballcap down lower over my head, out of habit more than necessity, I wait a few seconds before pulling out onto the road behind West’s dad.

Crusher turns the radio on low as we trail Curtis for twenty minutes. He pulls up in front of a three-story townhouse a couple of miles from the UCCS campus, parking at the curb, directly underneath a street lamp.

“Shit.” Crusher presses his nose to the tinted window as the front door of the townhouse opens and three brunettes walk out. “I think I know one of them.”

“Which one?” I ask, snatching my camera from the back seat as Curtis exits the car and heads toward the women.

“The girl at the back with the shorter hair. I might have fucked her one time in the bathroom at TJ’s.”

“You might have?” I arch a brow as I remove the lens cover from my camera.

He grins. “I’m in my last year of college. Fucked a lot of pussy since I rocked up here, and I mean a lot. Can’t expect me to remember every broad.”

“Charming. I bet the girls would love to hear that.”

Bringing the camera to my face, I snap a succession of pics as Curtis leans in to kiss one of the women on the cheek. His arm slides around her waist as he escorts her to the car. Her two friends trail behind them. I continue snapping away, snarling as the girl grins up at him, sliding her hand up his chest. Curtis opens the passenger door, and I get a good look at her under the glow of the light before she slides inside.

“She’s a looker,” Crusher says. “It’s like he went out of his way to find someone who looks the complete opposite of his wife.” I’d just thought the same thing. The girl has long poker-straight black hair, and her skin looks pale against her bright red lips. She is poured into a teeny black dress, which leaves little to the imagination. Ample cleavage threatens to spill out of the front of her lowcut dress. It dips at her narrow waist before flaring over wide hips. She’s shorter than Kendall by a few inches. “She’s much younger than him.” Crusher states the obvious.

I let them pull away from the curb before following. “This is student land. If they live here, they must go to UCCS.” Which means she is most likely in her early twenties.

We trail them to TJ’s Sports Bar & Grill, one of our favorite haunts, and follow them inside. It’s crazy busy tonight, and all the booths and barstools are occupied. Curtis leads the ladies through the crowd, finding an empty high table with one stool, which he claims for the brunette with the red lips. He flags a waitress and orders drinks while we hang back, just out of sight.

“He’s her sugar daddy.” Crusher states the obvious again. “She probably sees the car and the flashy clothes and thinks she’s onto a good thing.”

“He’s fucking pathetic.” I cast a quick glance around the packed bar. “Look at this place, and then look at him. He sticks out like a sore thumb in his chinos and polo shirt.”

“You want a beer?” Crusher asks as I fix my eyes on Curtis and the girl with their heads bent together, deep in conversation.

I shake my head. “I’ll have a water, and we’re not staying long.” I don’t want him to see me, but I need some evidence. A kiss on the cheek and a hand around her back isn’t much to go on, even if it’s clear by the blatant eye fucking they are more than friends.

I pretend to mess with my phone while I keep an eye on the dickhead and his little friend. Crusher returns with a beer for him and a water for me, and we move spots over to the side, pressed in against the wall. I have a better angle here to take pics, and it’s more private.

The girl flings her arms around Curtis, pulling his face down to hers and smashing her lips against his. His hands gravitate to her hips, and she spreads her legs, leaving room for him to stand between them. Thank fuck, there’s a decent camera on my phone because I just hit the jackpot. Grabbing handfuls of his hair, she presses herself up against him while he devours her mouth, like he’s not in public. Her legs wrap around his waist, as he thrusts against her, neither of them caring they are drawing attention.

He clearly doesn’t give a flying fuck if he gets caught, and it enrages me. How dare he treat the sweetest woman I know like this. It’s like the ultimate slap in the face for everything Kendall has done for him. And this asshole claims he’s a family man? What a fucking joke. He lied to his kids’ faces when he promised he was going to make things right with their mom when he clearly has no intention of fixing his marriage.

A part of me rejoices at that thought until I think about the devastation this will do to Kendall. Curtis is a selfish prick, and I wouldn’t put it past him to remain married to her while continuing to fuck around behind her back. I’m so glad I didn’t bring West into my confidence. Seeing his dad like this would kill him. And Kendall would be so hurt if she witnessed this. It’s bad enough he’s cheating, but to do it on her doorstep, in such a disrespectful manner, indicates how little he thinks of her.

I catch it all on video and grab a few pics, and then I’ve had enough. I can’t watch this another second before I do something I might regret. The urge to drag the asshole outside and beat him bloody is riding me hard. While I’d love to slap him around, I’m not convinced I’d be able to stop before killing the jerk, and he’s not worth risking jailtime. “I’m leaving.” I chug back the rest of my water. “Are you coming or staying?”

“A couple of guys from my class are here. Why don’t I stick around and get some more footage? He doesn’t know me from Adam, and I’ll be discreet.”

I clamp a hand on his shoulder. “Thanks, man.”

“If I can remember that chick’s name, I might be able to infiltrate their little gang and find out what he’s been saying.”

“That’s not a bad idea.”

“I’ll work my legendary charm.” He puffs out his chest, and I bark out a laugh. He’s so cheesy. Sometimes I wonder how he gets so many women—until I see the way they eye up his muscles and his tattoos. Every woman likes to think she can tame the quintessential bad boy, and Crusher works that to the max.
