To my grandmother.
It’s still hard to imagine life without you, but I’m taking it one day at a time.
“My heart is afraid that it will have to suffer“, the boy told the alchemist one night as they looked up at the moonless sky.
“Tell your heart that the fear of suffering is worse than the suffering itself.”
– Paulo Coelho
Prologue
Fisher
What are you afraid of?
I’m not talking about something like coulrophobia, the fear of clowns. If you do have that, though, I don’t blame you. Those painted faces are already creepy as is—but add Stephen King’s twisted interpretation and hardly anyone can see a red balloon and a clown without thinking I’m fucked.
There’s a difference between fears and phobias. One is an emotional response. Phobias are irrational reactions that seep into our consciousness through books, movies, old wives’ tales, or an overload of information coming from the internet. You hear about someone dying from a spider bite and suddenly you develop arachnophobia.
