Reckless Truths (Lost Kings MC #21)(94)
Author: Autumn Jones Lake

“I’ll be fine. Come here.” I gather him in my arms and hug him tight.

After a few beats, he gently pushes me away. “You need to go marry that ultra-alpha man of yours with a big smile on your face.”

“Ultra-alpha, huh?” I sniffle and laugh at the same time. “Alpha isn’t enough?”

“Not for him.” He purses his lips. Thoughtful. “He loves you so much. He really would do anything for you.”

“He would.”

“And you’d do anything for him.” He side-eyes me. “The two of you together are terrifying.”

“Aw, what a romantic thing to say on my wedding day.” I lean into him, bumping him with my shoulder.

Someone knocks on the door, then pushes it open. Hope peers inside. “It’s dress time, Charlotte.”

Trinity follows Hope inside and snaps a few pictures. A sweet one of Carter handing me his drawing, a few light-hearted shots, and a few traditional bride pictures.

Lilly joins us, and Carter leans in to give me a hug. “You have sisters now who will be a hell of a lot more supportive on your wedding day than our mother ever would’ve been,” he whispers.

I hug him back as his words repeat in my head. My mother would’ve found some way to ruin my wedding or make it all about her. “You’re right.”

The truth may hurt but that doesn’t make it any less true.

TELLER

“Charlotte’s on board with the ink.” Carter grins as he joins Blake and me in the backyard. “She was not thrilled about the ax-throwing.”

“Why’d you tell her, then?” Blake asks.

“I told you she’d love the drawing,” I say. “You were up there an awfully long time. Is she feeling okay?”

This whole can’t see the bride before the wedding rule is bullshit.

Carter slides his gaze to Blake, then back to me. “We had a brother-sister heart-to-heart.”

I throw a teasing glance Blake’s way. “Why isn’t my sister having one of those with me?”

Blake chuckles and sets his ax on a wide tree stump. He glances at Carter, then me. “She’s a little busy.”

“Everything okay?” I ask Carter when we’re alone.

“Yeah. She can tell you what we talked about, later.” His face perks up. “She looks really pretty.”

“Of course she does.” My gaze strays to the back of the house, to our bedroom window. From this angle and distance, I can’t see more than a few shapes moving around. One of them has to be my soon-to-be-wife.

“Hey.” Carter taps my arm, drawing my attention away from the window. “Thanks for…well, everything you do for her.”

I cock my head, and almost ask what the hell they talked about, but he looks so serious, I decide not to tease him. “Hey, before everyone starts arriving, come into the house with me. I have something for you.”

He eyes me with his usual skeptical head tilt but follows. “Should I be concerned?”

I catch sight of Wrath and point to the house. The girls chased me out of the upstairs so Charlotte could get ready. They graciously allowed me the use of my living room, for now. I enter through the kitchen and find Rock and Grace in the kitchen. “Is Hope upstairs with Charlotte?” I ask.

“Yup. Gettin’ close.”

Grace throws me a floppy hand wave and I scoop her into my arms. “You being good?”

“Yef,” she says, carefully sounding out the word.

I pop a kiss on her forehead and set her down.

The door opens behind me. “We doing this?” Wrath asks. “Running out of time.”

“Doing what?” Carter asks, backing away from us.

“Nothing bad,” I assure him. “Stay here.”

I nod at Rock as I walk past him into the hall closet where I open the safe and pull out the package for Carter.

“I wanted you to have something to wear to the wedding,” I say as I return to the kitchen.

His gaze drops to my hands. “Brown paper bag wrapping? I don’t even get a bow or something on it?”

I blow out an annoyed breath.

Wrath rumbles with laughter. “Never stop irritating him, Scribbles.”

Rock circles his fingers in the air in a hurry-it-up motion. “Let’s get to it, knucklehead.”

I hand Carter the package and he takes it to the table, sitting across from Rock.

Curious, Grace toddles over, pressing her little hand against Carter’s leg and standing on tippy-toes.

“Come here, Grace.” He lifts her and sets her in his lap. “Let’s see what your big brother has in here.”

She helps him tear the paper off, joyfully throwing each scrap on the floor.

Carter pulls out the black leather and holds it up, staring at the back patch.

“Uh, are you claiming me, Teller? I mean, I like you and I’m happy you’re marrying my sister and all, but…”

“No, wiseass.”

“Wait a second.” Carter glances down at Grace and the little black vest she’s wearing over her purple sparkling dress. “This is like the ones Wrath got for the kids.”

“Those are ‘product of.’ You’re ‘protected by,’” I say.

“Just for club events,” Rock explains.

“No one should fuck with you. But we still want to make it clear, if someone does, then they fuck with all of us,” I add.

“Wow. Really?”

“Look at the front,” Wrath prompts.

“Scribbles!” Carter grins. “Thank you.” He looks at each one of us. “I’ll do you proud, I promise.”

“I know you will.”

“Yay!” Grace yells, throwing her little arms in the air.

“Keep that energy, wee one,” Wrath says, picking her up. “You’ve got a long day of festivities ahead.”

She slaps his cheeks and plants a kiss on his nose.

Blake opens the kitchen door and walks in, holding Alexa’s hand. Alexa immediately runs over to Wrath and jumps up, either to get his attention or to see Grace. He leans over and picks her up too.

Blake’s gaze lands on Carter. “Looks good.”

“You were in on it too, Murphy?” Carter asks.

“Yeah.” He slaps Carter’s shoulders. “We’ve got your back.”

“Thanks.”

Heidi wanders into the kitchen from the direction of the living room, carrying baby Bit-bit.

“Have you been here the whole time?” I ask.

“I wanted her to nap now,” she whispers. “But maybe I should’ve waited. I don’t want her to cry during the ceremony.”

“It’ll be fine,” I assure her.

Grinder and Dex join us next. Z follows with his son, who hangs back until Wrath sets the girls down.

Rav pokes his head in the door. “Is this the nursery?”

“Yeah, jackass,” Rock says.

“Come in, it’s not contagious.” I wave him closer. “I swear.”

“Don’t worry, you’re not in danger of impregnating anyone with that attitude,” Dex adds, cracking everyone but Rav up.

“Awful lot of kidlets here now,” Rav says.
