Chicago Code Blue(52)
Author: Diane Portman-Ray

It’s our first Christmas together and I convinced the chief to give us three days off. Shaw will be on charge of the cardio department until we go back, you know, because his life is hollow and miserable, and he finds no joy in the winter holidays.

When I walk into the ER, I find my too-beautiful-to-be-true girlfriend sipping coffee and arranging some charts. She’s always ready for me. In every way possible. Suddenly I’m eager to check her panties, see if she’s wet for me already.

When our eyes meet, she smiles, and the room lights up.

“Hello, beautiful.” My arms go around her like a chain, and I crook my neck to give her a kiss, but she turns her cheek to me.

“We’re working, Dr. Ford, no PDA.”

“How about last week when I fucked you against the wall of consult room five?

Or when you sucked me off in next to the MRI…”

“Shh!” She slaps her hand over my mouth to shut me up, and I bite her playfully. I love when she gets all shy. Who am I kidding? I love everything about her. “If you try and pull something like this when your parents come and visit, Zachary…”

“What, remind you of all the filthy…”

“You know what, how about we put a hold on sexual activity until New Year’s. This way the list of filth can’t get any longer.”

I’d make a scene if I didn’t know she was bluffing. The one time I was too tired to take her riding and went straight to sleep, I woke up with her pussycat on my face. Best. Breakfast. Ever.

“Ok, I’ll play nice, but give me a kiss first.” Our lips meet and I allow myself a few moments just to feel the sweetness that can be found in London’s arms. She left from my arms only a few hours ago, but I’ve missed her like crazy. You’d think that after a few months my exasperating need for her would cool down. Not a chance. She still drives me crazy with her lack of obedience and that tight ass.

Speaking of which, with no shame and no regard for our newly updated “work relations protocol” that HR released, I let my left hand slide down and grab a handful of her butt cheek, squeezing. She wiggles and tries to get away from me.

“Zach, people are looking at us. Stop!”

“What are you talking about, there’s no one here.”

“That patient with the broken ribs is ogling us. You are making him uncomfortable.”

“Like hell I am. He is probably horny, so stay clear of him. I don’t wanna lose my license over kicking a patient’s ass.”

I give her one of the most seductive smiles I can, and she falls for it like a kid for candy, so I get a quick kiss on the cheek.

“You have two transplants today and a pre-operative consult. I’ll be by your side all day, handsome.”

Like she should. Her face lights up reflecting my wild love for her, and that’s when I realize how true my words are. She should be by my side forever, for all fucking eternity, and I’ll do everything in my power to make it happen.

We did business as usual and London was there all day, touching my arm and stealing touches from me all the time. It’s like she was letting me know I don’t need to worry about her running away…

…But for the first time in a long time I find myself not being scared about that. For the first time in a long time – fuck it, for the first time ever – I know I can trust a woman with my heart and soul. This woman. My woman.

Rushed? Maybe, but screw it. I see too many hearts stopping out of nowhere to hesitate.

Six hours into my shift and I send London to take a nap in my locker room while I go grab some food. She’s been in the hospital longer than me; my girl deserves a break. Look at me smiling like a teenage idiot and thinking about my girl. But that’s what she is, mine entirely.

I buy myself a coffee and one big ass portion of fries with mayo. I really need to cut down on my fats and carbs, but maybe I’ll start Monday. The cafeteria is too crowded, so I decide to take my meal to the locker room and do something pathetic, like watch London sleep.

I stop when I see Sullivan sitting on his butt on the stairs, drinking one of his gross herbal teas. Perfect, I was just about to call his beeper. If there’s someone who can give me advice on my plan, James is that someone.

“No broken brains today?”

He looks up briefly but goes back to staring into his cup. He looks like he has just come out of a hell of an operation. No surprise here; as a neurosurgeon, Sullivan operates way less than me. He only tackles on the cases that need the most delicate approach, that’s why he is a world class surgeon. More than once I’ve seen him spending over ten hours in the OR. I think sixteen is his record.

“Hey, Zach.”

“Look, man, I need your…expertise. I need you to teach me how to be a romantic bitch and not look like a fool in front of my entire family.”

“Yeah, sure.”

“It’s a big deal so look more enthusiastic, dude.”

“If you say so.”

“I’ll ask London to marry me on Christmas day. Do you think I should pretend to forget her gift, then pop the ring?”

“Yeah, you are right.”

That’s the moment when I realize he wasn’t listening to a word I said. The Sullivan I know would have jumped up and down by now, begging to be the best man. Spoiler, he is too much of a pussy to be my best men. Jessica will be my best man. He can be the ring bearer…maybe.

“James, are you ok, man? You look off.”

I let my fries down and grab his shoulder and he finally look at me.

“Sorry, I wasn’t listening. What did you say, Zach?”

“I’ll ask London to marry me. Shouldn’t you be more excited about it? You are the conjugal wizard around here, with the wife and the perfect baby. How is my goddaughter, anyway?”

“Good, she is good.”

“Still no comment on the London thing?” “Zach?”

“What the hell is wrong with you, man?” “Avery left me.”

Oh. Fuck.
