Chapter Eight
Kenni has already left for work when I wake up the next morning, feeling his side of the bed, it’s stone cold, so he must have left some time ago.

“Plenty of time for that, don’t forget we’re going out with Coral this evening.” She loudly sighs because she knows she’s lost the argument and goes off in search of something.
“My son is going to go crazy tonight isn’t he? I’m assuming tonight is girls only, which means whatever you come down those stairs wearing he isn’t going to approve of.” Well, she has the measure of her son quite well I would say.
“We have an understanding about my wardrobe, I told him I’m not an old lady and I think he now understands.” She laughs out loud and proceeds to shake her head.
“I think you may be kidding yourself darlin, but I look forward to the fireworks.” She is still laughing as she walks out of the kitchen. I quickly send Coral a text checking she is still ok for tonight as Ruby walks back in.
“Do we have to go into town today?” What is her problem? It’s like she is deliberately trying to avoid the town. I don’t get the appeal of staying on the ranch to be honest. It’s pretty, for like ten minutes, but the novelty soon wears off.
“Yes we do, what’s really going on with you?” She looks away from me and doesn’t answer my question. I swig the last of my coffee down which wasn’t a good idea as I choke and nearly puke it back up.
After I put my dishes in the dishwasher I grab my sister by the arm and drag her out of the house towards Kenni’s car, much to her displeasure.
“So what’s really going on Rubes, why the reluctance to leave the ranch?” She sits there quietly saying nothing for at least two minutes before letting out a giggle and looking straight at me.
