“Soon.” And that’s all she gives me, I’m aware off things with Jed so I don’t push her, she fills me in on life back home before eventually hanging up.
After I get out I get into some pyjamas and brush my hair before heading back down to everyone on the porch, I don’t think they expected me back down and their faces show it when they see me. I walk straight over to Kenni and sit down beside him.
“You ok darlin?”
“Yeah I just had a phone call with Ruby.” I didn’t miss Jed’s head swinging around at the mention of my sister’s name.
“She ok?” He asks.
“I’m not sure, she was her usual sparkly self but something was missing, she also brought you a ticket back into bed with me, she’s a miracle worker, you can thank her the next time you see her.”
“I’m glad, I guess I owe her then, are you missing her darlin, she’s welcome here anytime you know.”
“Yeah I know, I love my sister but since I had my babies we’re not as close as we once were, I guess she lost her wing woman and she’s been off doing god knows what with god knows who.” I didn’t like the twisted, tortured look that came over Jed’s face so I decide to play matchmaker and give him some hope.
“She’ll be here soon enough, even if I have to get my brother to drag her. I’d really like to have my parents come over, it’s about time everyone officially met, what do you think babe?” I think he’s just happy not to be in my bad books anymore and would pretty much agree to anything I ask him.
“I think that sounds perfect, I would also like to meet your brother and Ruby again too, mum, dad do you mind if they stay on the ranch?”
“Of course not son, this is your home, you don’t need to ask us boy.” Emmett pipes up.
“Ok I’ll get on the case then, it will probably take a few weeks to arrange as they’ll need to sort out work.” We sit in silence for a few minutes.
“Luci what happened the night the twins were born, what was the accident that you had?” Annett ask me full of innocence. I’ve been dreading having to answer this.
“Well I was out New Year’s Eve with my brother and sister and was quite heavily pregnant, my feet were hurting me and I couldn’t stand around on them anymore and decided to go home and see the new year in with my parents so I said goodbye to everyone and walked outside to the car park as I had taken my car with me.” I take a wobbly breath and Kenni grabs my hand and squeezes it, silently letting me know he’s there, I don’t know how he knows it a difficult story to tell but he does.
“I was just about to get into my car when I heard someone shouting loudly at me, shouting at me that I was a whore.” Kenni has frozen in place and has a deathlike grip on my hand now, I squeeze his hand now letting him know that I am here for him.
“It was an ex of mine, he came up into my face again saying that I was a whore, we exchanged a few heated words and he raised his hand to hit me, I saw it in plenty of time and ducked down quick enough to get out of the way so he missed, I had to protect my boys, there was a commotion, I didn’t know what was happening because I couldn’t bring myself to look up, Ruby said it was ok and I was safe now, by this time shock had set in and felt my legs were wet with blood, anyway In trying to move out of the way I had somehow triggered early labour, when I got to the hospital I was out cold and, well you know the rest.” I move to crouch myself forward hanging my head down, Kenni rubs my back and I eventually look up at them.
“Sorry it was a really difficult time in my life, in hindsight I wish I just took the hit now, I nearly lost my boys over that, I’ll never forget waking up and feeling my bump gone, I honestly thought at that moment that I had lost them.” There isn’t a dry eye amongst anyone now.
“I want to kill him.” Kenni says to the whole group.
“Babe my brother and his friends virtually left him for dead that night, that’s why I wasn’t bothered that he wasn’t charged with anything.”
“WHAT, NO FUCKING CHARGES FILED, ARE YOU FUCKING JOKING ME? That man nearly killed my sons and he wasn’t fucking charged for it, I’m definitely going to kill him now.” He is now stood up pacing.
“I guess I owe your brother big time. I hate that I wasn’t there for you though.” I expected the guilt because I felt it too.
“Everything was ok in the end, it all turned out well.” I tried my best to calm him.
“Did you say it turned out well, I fail to see how it turned out well, I didn’t meet my sons until they were 18 months old Luci, by all accounts I’m lucky that I met them at all. I didn’t know any of this had happened, how is any of that turning out well? Tell me.” I just sit there looking at him.
“Kenni, what’s done is done.” His father attempts to pacify him, and stands up to hold him, he shrugs out of the embrace and then walks off leaving me there, I sit there not knowing what to do.
“Let him go darlin, he’s just trying to process it all, that was a lot to take in for all of us. To think if things turned out differently we may have never known those little boys, my grandsons.” She becomes inconsolable as Emmett and Annabelle attempt to calm her a little, Jed comes over to sit next to me and wraps me up in his arms.
“You’re home now darlin that’s all that matters, he’ll be alright when he calms down.” Everyone sits around for a few minutes gathering their thoughts.
Kenni hasn’t come back yet so I say goodnight to everyone and head up to bed, when I get to the top of the stairs I see Kenni’s figure leaning on the doorframe of the kid’s room, just looking in at our children. I walk up behind him and wrap my arm around him, he grabs one of my hands and brings it up to his mouth kissing it.
“I’m sorry, I’m struggling to deal with it, give me some time.” Pulling my arms away I move around him so I am stood in front of him and we both just spend a few minutes watching our precious babies sleeping, eventually I head over to Betsy and pick her up carrying her through to her own cot in our room.
Once in the room Kenni shuts the bedroom door and props himself up against the wall to the side of it.
“Luci in one day I have been deprived of my wife, my children and found out I nearly never got to meet my boys. I’m wound pretty tight and I need to forget about everything and lose myself in my wife who I haven’t been inside of for over 48 hours by the way. I don’t think I can give you what you want though I can’t be gentle tonight, I’m sorry.” I stalk up to him and his eyes never leave mine.
“Babe it’s called give and take, I’m yours and my body is yours and I give you my permission to use me how you need to.” He scoops down and picks me up kissing me like he’s a dying man and he’s never going to see me again. He slower lowers me to stand on the floor and begins stripping me out of my pyjamas.
