To My Dad's Hot Best Friend (The Inappropriate Bachelors #8)(6)
Author: J. S. Cooper

Sincerely,

Your Dad’s Hot Best Friend

“Oh shit.” I gasped and then an idea crossed my mind and I typed back quickly.

Hi Sam,

You passed the test, lol. My friends and I were sending prank emails to everyone. :)

See you soon.

Shelby

I pressed send and bit on my lower lip. I could only hope that he bought my story, otherwise, the meeting at the coffee shop was going to be very very interesting.

Chapter Five

I studied my reflection in my rearview mirror before I headed into the coffee shop. I looked like I was going to a pageant, hoping to become the next Miss America. I wanted to ensure I looked my best. I could have dressed down and worn no makeup, but I didn’t want Sam to look at me and think of dowdy little Shelby. I wanted to go in there and make a statement, even if I wasn’t actually going to reel him in right away. I needed to be the bait to attract him to my hook. I could take it slowly.

I got out of the car and made my way into the coffee shop. As I walked in, I could see several men wanting me and several women wanting to be me. I loved that feeling of knowing I was wanted.

I walked into the coffee shop with my head held high and looked around. I saw Sam’s sparkling blue eyes looking in my direction right away, and I went over to him, smiling widely.

“Hi, Sam. Thanks for meeting me.”

“No worries.” He stood up and gave me a quick hug. My face grew red at his touch.

Get it together, Shelby, I thought to myself. “Did you order already?” I asked, looking at the table and noticing he had a glass of water there.

“No, I just got some water. I figured I’d wait till you got here and then I’d get both of our drinks.”

“Oh, you didn’t have to do that.”

“Of course I’m going to get your drink, Shelby, and anything you’d like to eat.”

He gave me his warm, dazzling smile, and I could feel my heart melting. He was just so nice and so handsome and—oooh, the things I wanted to do to him!

“What would you like to drink?” he asked as he headed towards the counter. I was a little disappointed that he hadn’t made any comments about my appearance. Didn’t he think I looked good? But then I realized he couldn’t exactly say anything. He was my dad’s best friend. He couldn’t tell me that I looked hot or sexy, which was what I was going for.

“I think I’d like to get a hot mocha latte and maybe a bagel with cream cheese. What are you getting?”

“I’m just going to get a black coffee, and maybe I’ll also get a bagel.” He gestured at the table. “You can have a seat if you want.”

“Oh, no. I’ll come with you so I can help you carry the stuff back to the table.”

He chuckled. “Thank you for the offer, Shelby, but I’ve got it. Just have a seat.”

“No worries.” I sat down and pulled out my phone while I waited for him to order. Okay, get it together, Shelby. Get it together. I wasn’t sure how I was going to make my move. All I knew was that I needed to make a move.

I needed to get this man into my bed. I needed to experience what it was like to be with a real, mature, hot handsome hunk like Sam. I didn’t want those stupid frat guys anymore. I wanted an older man.

The only problem was I had absolutely no idea if he was interested in me even a little bit. The fact that he was my dad’s best friend complicated things, but would he want me even if we took my dad out of the equation?

Before I could go through my list of items to talk about, Sam was back. He sat across from me and nodded at my phone. “Doing homework?”

“No.” I quickly put my phone back into my handbag. “I was just checking my emails.”

“Okay. So how’s school going?” he asked me in that way that friends of your parents always did to be polite. But I didn’t want him to be polite or act like my parents’ friends. I wanted him to ask me questions that a man who was interested would ask me. Like, did I have a boyfriend, or if I was going on dates, or what I was looking for, though I knew it was unrealistic to expect him to ask me any of those things.

“School’s okay. I’m really excited that I’m going to be graduating soon.”

“And what are you going to be doing after graduation?”

“I don’t know. Maybe get a law degree.”

“Oh, have you taken the LSAT already?” he asked in surprise.

“No.” I shook my head. “Why?”

“Well, if you want to go to law school, you have to take the LSAT. And I would assume you would’ve started your applications already.”

“Oh. I mean, I’m not really going to apply to law school. I just said that to sound good.” I laughed, and he smiled.

“Okay, then. So, you said your parents’ anniversary was coming up?”

“Yeah, and I was actually thinking that we could throw them a surprise party.”

“Okay.” He nodded. “Sounds like a good idea. And how can I help?”

“Well, I was hoping that we could throw it at your penthouse.”

“My penthouse?” He looked surprised. “I guess. Is there a reason why you wouldn’t want to throw it at your parents’ house?”

“Well, I think it would be hard to set it up, especially if I wanted it to be a surprise,” I said quickly. The real reason I wanted to have it at his penthouse was because I wanted to see his bedroom. And not only did I want to see his bedroom, I wanted to spend time in his penthouse getting ready for the party. Hopefully, one thing would lead to another and I’d end up in his bed. That was the plan. I just needed to make it happen.

“I guess we could have it there. When are you thinking?”

“Well, soon. I would really have to come over and just check out the space and see how many people we could have and what sort of events we can set up,” I said.

“What do you mean, what sort of events?” He frowned slightly.

“Oh, you know, like if we could have a DJ and a bartender, you know.”

“Huh.” He looked at me in surprise. “Well, that would be the biggest party I’ve ever had at my place.”

“Oh, really?” I asked. “Do you not have many parties?”

“No.” He shook his head. “I don’t really have time for parties.”

“Oh? Too busy with your girlfriend?” I asked, though silently I was screaming at myself for having asked a question. Based on what I knew about him, I was pretty confident that he didn’t have a girlfriend, but things could’ve changed. I just wanted to make sure that he was single, free, and disengaged because I didn’t want to waste my time.

“No, no girlfriend. Pam and I broke up about six months ago.”

“Pam?” I said slightly too loudly.

“Yeah, Pam. Why?”

“I don’t even know about Pam. Who’s Pam?”

He gave me a quizzical look. “She’s my ex-girlfriend.”

Oh, I guess that was obvious. “I never heard about her.”

“Do your parents talk about my relationships often?” he said.

“No, but I just thought I would’ve heard something about her or would’ve seen her or…”
